For just five dollars a month, you can help these friend groups get in touch with an experienced Sona main and alleviate up to 90% of League Fatigue. Jokes aside, Sona is a pretty amazing support with some equally amazing skins. But which are the best? That’s what we’ll try to answer today as we rank all of Sona’s skins, taking into account both what they offer and their price-tag.
11. Pentakill Sona
Released: September 21st, 2010 Price: 975 RP I want to start off with Pentakill Sona as it pisses me off the most. The skin is amazing when it comes to the base model. A very rock and roll Sona, with chains hanging off, tattooed arms, a scary looking instrument, it’s all there. However, someone at Riot decided that adding new sound effects was too good to be true. What that leaves us is a badass Sona who looks like she’s about to destroy your mailbox playing gentle and serene music throughout the game. The disconnect between the amazing skin model and the base animations was just too much for me – especially when you take into account that this skin got an update as recently as 2017!
10. Muse Sona
Released: September 21st, 2010 Price: 975 RP I’m obviously not a big fan of the release skins. Muse Sona thematically makes a lot of sense, as she always had that alluring goddess vibes. And I think this skin did a pretty decent job of making Sona fit this category. With curly blue hair, a white dress, and a golden harp-looking instrument, it all gives off strong Ancient Greece vibes. I also really like the smaller details added to her dress. However, this skin is outclassed by most of its peers, simply because they all add new animations or sound cues alongside the base model change. So, a decent skin, but a bit behind on the times.
9. Silent Night Sona
Released: December 10th, 2010 Price: 520 RP This skin is simply adorable. It features Sona in an appropriately festive theme, wearing a nice red hood, with Christmas ornaments hanging from her instrument. And yes, I will keep calling it “her instrument” instead of the proper name. For only 520 RP, the base model change already brings pretty good value. But the skin also features some new emotes. Riot obviously really wanted to hammer down the Christmas theme – so they added emotes for Silent Night Sona where she plays the beginnings of popular Christmas songs. A nice touch, and an overall good skin to check out.
8. Odyssey Sona
Released: September 12th, 2018 Price: 1350 RP I have a lot of good things to say about this one, but I also have one giant pet peeve. Let’s get the good stuff out of the way first. The splash art is simply a 10/10. And all of the animations are equally as impressive. I especially like that the ability animations are on the more subtle side, with some twingling stars and soft geometric shapes shielding your allies. Those two aspects I think Riot nailed. However, the in-game model leaves a lot to be desired. It simply feels a bit too clunky, especially when compared to the slick splash art. Maybe it’s because of the shoulder guards, but her model is just missing that elegance and floatiness that made Sona recognizable.
7. Guqin Sona
Released: January 10th, 2012 Price: 975 RP Although I don’t think this is the best 975 RP skin in Sona’s collection, it still offers some amazing value. The in-game model has been made to look as elegant and dignified as humanly possible, while going for that eastern theme. And I think Riot nailed it. I especially like how they designed her instrument: it’s just distinct enough to really pull you in, but not too different to make you dissociate from the original. What really makes me like this skin, however, are the sound effects. And I don’t mean the emotes. This skin will just play the most serene tunes while you’re running around. And that music alone makes the 975 RP seem more than reasonable.
6. Arcade Sona
Released: August 31st, 2012 Price: 1350 RP Now we’ve moved on to what I believe are “the big four” when it comes to Sona skins, so keep in mind that they’re all extremely close in terms of coolness and value. I honestly love Arcade Sona. But she does have one fatal flaw that pushes her to fourth place on my list. And that is the lack of a proper backing animation. I just find it insane that she doesn’t have a unique backing animation, given how amazing all of her other animations are! Having star auto-attacks, cool wavery patterns, and retro sound effects on her basic abilities and a fricking DDR layout on her ult, all amazing ideas! And yet she can’t have a cool backing animation. Big sad.
5. Sweetheart Sona
Released: February 11th, 2016 Price: 975 RP If you’re balling on a budget, this is the skin for you. It features a really nice Valentine theme, and comes with some pretty dope animations as well. It even has a really cool backing animation – even though it’s cheaper than a certain skin on here, cough cough. The base model design is about what you would expect, with lots of yellows, purples, and reds, as well as more than enough hearts to go around. The animations are all very slick, incorporating the heart symbol in one way or the other without ever feeling too forced. Even the splash art is top quality! So if you don’t feel like taking out a second mortgage, this is the skin for you.
4. Star Guardian Sona
Released: July 14th, 2022 Price: 1350 RP Sona was one of the most predictable additions to the Star Guardian roster. That’s because she fits so perfectly within it that I’m honestly surprised it took them this long. And there isn’t really anything bad that I can say about Star Guardian Sona. The character model looks exactly like you’d imagine it would – with lots of polish and Sona’s innate cuteness on full display. You also get your little companion that shows up during certain animations (like backing and even your empowered auto attacks). Which again is pretty par for the course. Your ability animations are decent – and even though none of them really try anything new, they’re all serviceable. So, I can’t really fault Riot for that. The many sound effects (especially the little jingle that’s based on your last ability used) are all very bubbly and energetic. And your homeguard animation has you flying around like the rest of the Guardian squad. Truly the only way in which this skin stands out somewhat from the rest is in its chroma selection. Because man is it good. Not only are there nine of them in total (compared to the usual 6-8) but they’re also all straight-up bangers that completely change the feel of the skin. Overall, it’s the most paint by numbers Star Guardian skin I’ve ever seen. So if you like the skin line, you’re sure to absolutely adore this one as well.
3. Pentakill III: Lost Chapter Sona
Released: September 9th, 2021 Price: 1350 RP Well, it seems like Riot has taken my advice since the beginning of this article. See, the character model here is a bit less “rock and roll” and a bit more gothic, with a dark dress with golden edgings. But I still think it sends a clear message. Of course, the real star of the show is within the sound effects department – because all of your abilities now have guitar riff sound effects, which is honestly all we ever wanted from this skin line. Even your backing animation has you absolutely jamming out, which is always a plus. Visually, all of the animations are rather clean and concise, making you feel like you’re actually playing a newer champion. Lost Chapter Sona also features a pretty rocking splash art, and 8 distinct chromas in case you want to change things up a little. My only complaint is that this skin doesn’t come with a new voice over, as it’s hard to get into the metal groove if Sona keeps talking about love in her normal serene voice. But I guess I can’t ask for too much.
2. DJ Sona
Released: February 25th, 2015 Price: 3250 RP If you were around when this skin first dropped, you know that it’s well deserving of its title as an ultimate skin. Although it is among the most expensive skins out there, it brings some stellar content as well. First, it’s like getting 3 skins in one. Because you can swap between three forms that all have a slightly different visual design, different ability animations, and different soundtracks. And man are the soundtracks a treat! No matter what mood you’re in, be it fast and aggressive, or chill and mellow, DJ Sona has you covered. However, I do believe there’s a skin that can compete with DJ Sona while rocking a much lower price tag:
1. PsyOps Sona
Released: September 3rd, 2020 Price: 1820 RP PsyOps Sona is quite interesting, as it also features a transformation just like DJ Sona. However it is not voluntary. You start the game as a prisoner of sorts, with your arms bound and a helmet on your head. Just pure Elfen Lied energy if you ask me. But when you hit level six, you break out of your shackles, letting your long white hair flow with the wind. I just love this concept, and I think Riot did a stellar job designing this skin. Never have I felt more powerful when hitting level six than I do now! Some of the animations are also simply brilliant, with the dance animation being my favorite by far. I know that a lot of Sona mains were disappointed that they got another futuristic skin rather than Star Galaxy. But I think it’s still more than worth checking out.
